Abstract

Objective: Validate the Questionário sobre o Choro do Bebê test that is to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes about childhood crying as a cause of abusive head trauma on caregivers of children under 5 years of age. Materials and Methods: The validation consisted of two stages: (a) translation and cultural adaption to the Spanish language and (b) validation of the instrument. The direct translation of the instrument from Portuguese into Spanish was carried out and the digree of agrement between both translations was evaluated. The translations were synthesized to obtain a single test, which was retro – translated to Portuguese again and evaluated the degree of agreement and equivalence with the original version. A consensus was reached by the expert committee, obtaining the Spanish version of the questionnaire to finally apply it in a pilot of 50 caregives to determine the internal consistency and the degree of comprehensibility. Results: a kappa of 0,90 was found between the two translations made from the same test, and a kappa of 0,86 between the two retro – translations. The Spearrman correlation was 0,80. The degree of comprehensibilty was 98,6% and the reliability measured with Cronbach´s alfa of 0,60. Conclusions: The validation of the Questionário sobre o Choro do Bebê instrument originated a final instrument with high comprehensibility and acceptable reliability.
